A Sukhoi Su-35S fighter jet crashed into the Sea of Okhotsk in the Russian Far East after an engine failure.
The crash happened on July 31 during a routine training flight in the Khabarovsk region. The Russian Eastern Military District Command said the Su-35S suffered an engine failure.
“The pilot ejected successfully and was later found by the rescue team. There is currently no health threat to the pilot,” the statement said.
According to preliminary data, after the pilot ejected safely, the plane lost control and continued to move and crashed at an unknown location in the Sea of Okhotsk. The military has opened an investigation into the incident.
The Su-35S is one of the most modern fighter aircraft used by the Russian Air Force. This aircraft is an upgraded version of the Su-27 – the iconic fighter for decades, the mainstay of the frontline air force in Russia and several other countries.
