According to the Russian Satellite News Agency, Rogozin, President of Roscosmos, said on April 27 that the company will build 46 sets of “Sarmat” intercontinental ballistic missile systems.
On April 20, local time, the Russian armed forces successfully tested the RS-28 “Sarmat” intercontinental ballistic missile from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome, and the test warhead accurately hit the target area on the Kamchatka Peninsula. After all the tests are completed, the missile will enter service with the Strategic Missile Forces.
After the successful tests of the newest Russian heavy intercontinental ballistic missile “Sarmat”. Russia decided it will make a total of 46 complexes of this type, allowing strikes at almost any point on the planet.
At the moment, state tests of the latest Russian heavy ICBM “Sarmat” are ongoing, but the prospects for the country to adopt at least 46 missiles of this type indicate that such weapons can provide effective protection of the country’s sovereignty.
According to earlier information about the destructive capabilities of the Russian Sarmat missile, the total capacity of 46 heavy Sarmat ICBMs is such that it is capable of destroying an area of about 18.5 million square kilometers. This, for example, is comparable to the total area of countries such as the United States and Canada.

“The appearance in Russia of heavy Sarmat ICBMs is, first of all, a psychological move that allows the enemy to weed out even the idea of entering into a conflict with Russia. However, this does not mean at all that Russia will not use such weapons in the event of a threat, ”the expert notes.
The Sarmat is a fifth-generation Russian heavy-duty intercontinental ballistic missile, weighing more than 200 tons, with a payload of 10 tons, and propelled by liquid fuel. The missile can carry 10 to 15 multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles (MIRV), and can also be equipped with a “Pioneer” hypersonic glide warhead, which adopts advanced penetration technology. The range is up to 18,000 kilometers. Some analysts believe that the missile, launched from Russia, can effectively strike global targets.
On April 20, after the successful test launch of the “Sarmat”, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the missile uses domestic technology and can break through any anti-missile system. There are no similar models in the world, nor there will be any in the near future. He stressed that Sarmat would ensure Russia’s security and force the minds of those trying to threaten Russia. The Russian Ministry of Defense pointed out that the “Sarmat” is the most powerful and longest-range ballistic missile in the world today.
Originally, the Russian intercontinental ballistic missile “Sarmat” was already on combat duty three years ago. The “Sarmat” missile system test was postponed for reasons, including the abandonment of Ukrainian components, which takes time to develop and manufacture its own “parts”, and the use of new technologies to solve engine and chassis production, all of which require additional time. According to Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, it now appears that the test will end this year and “Sarmat” will be on service officially.
Sarmat can reportedly load up to 10 large warheads (each weighing 1 ton), 16 smaller ones, a combination of warheads and countermeasures, or hypersonic boost-glide vehicles. The combination of the “Sarmat” and the hypersonic warhead will be unparalleled, and these missiles will become the basis of Russia’s nuclear shield within 30-40 years.
